School Violence - Giive Peace a Chance Essay - 1702 Words
Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule. ( Buddha.) Beginning in 1997, the frequency of school shootings has been increasing at an alarming rate. On December 1, 1997, Mike Carneal walks into Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky and opens fire on a daily prayer group. When the spray of bullets ceased, three young girls lay dead and five others were wounded. Classmates claim that Carneal hung out with people who did not believe in God and would sometimes heckle the morning worshippers. Carneal had also been in trouble for scratching graffiti on a wall and trying to view nude photos on the Internet. Parents should make sure the child has no access to weapons at home and the school should have a crisis counseling center in place to provide immediate help for students. Would all of these precautions prevent a student from killing? I feel the answer depends on each individual situation, but if it saves just one life it is definitely worth it. Years ago when parents sent their children off to school each day, they had no doubts as to their safety. Today, it can be a terrifying thing to send a child to school. Admittedly, there has always been some type of violence in the school yard. The class bully pushing someone around or a couple of boys fistfighting because of a disagreement. Violence in schools has come a long, frightening way since those days. Rape, drugs and alcohol, and deadly weapons are examples of what todays youth have to face in the schoolyard.
